Water in a Lincoln cabin from a factory drain defect

The owner of a Lincoln came to us with water in the cabin. The mats were always wet and water collected under the floor, even though the car had never been in an accident, the seals were intact and the windows closed tightly. For us this is an engineering problem in which the visible effect and the cause sit in different parts of the body.

How the drainage works and where it failed

Every modern car has drain tubes. They carry rainwater that gets into the cavities of the roof outside, past the cabin. The system is passive: water flows by gravity and only needs a clear tube with nothing in the way. That is exactly where the defect was. Back at the factory, during assembly, the tubes were fastened with plastic cable ties pulled too tight, and at those points they were flattened.

Then physics took over. A narrowed section lets through far less water than the tube is designed for, so the flow backs up in front of the tie and almost stops. In standing water, the sand and dust brought by rain settle to the bottom. Layer by layer, a dense plug formed in front of every narrowing, and the water, with no way out, found the shortest path into the cabin. This takes months and goes unnoticed by the owner for a long time.

Why we had to strip the whole interior

Water in a cabin can come from a dozen sources, from door seals to the air conditioner drain. To avoid treating a symptom, we stripped the interior completely, including the headliner. Only this way can you follow the drain tubes along their entire length, find the pinched spots and make sure there are no other leaks. The diagnosis was confirmed: the tubes were pinched by the ties and clogged with sand.

Mold in the sound insulation

The worst was waiting under the trim. Sound insulation has a porous structure, which is how it absorbs sound. The same structure soaks up water like a sponge and releases it very slowly. High humidity, warmth and no ventilation created ideal conditions for mold fungi, and the insulation was completely covered in mold. There was no point in cleaning it, because the mycelium grows deep into the fibres and the spores remain a source of odor and allergens. So we replaced the insulation with new material.

How we restored the interior

First we released the excessive squeeze on the drain tubes and cleared the sand out of them, so that water could again drain freely outside. Then every part of the interior, from the headliner to the carpet, went through deep cleaning. We paid special attention to drying, because moisture left in the body cavities quickly brings mold back. Every part was dried until all moisture was gone. We finished with disinfection of the interior, which destroys microorganisms and odors even where a brush cannot reach.

After that, every part went back in its place. The owner got a dry, clean and disinfected car that is pleasant to breathe in, and the cause of the leak is fixed.

Advice for car owners

Damp mats for no visible reason, windows fogging up from the inside, a musty smell in the cabin: all of this means water is collecting somewhere. It will not go away by itself. It soaks into the insulation, collects under the floor and reaches the wiring. Every week of delay adds work, so it is better not to put off the diagnosis.
