Stains on a sofa: why household stain removers and home remedies make it worse
When food drops on your favorite sofa or juice gets spilled, the first reaction is to run to the supermarket for a stain remover or search for “baking soda and vinegar”. In most cases, though, this turns a small stain into a big problem.
Why household cleaners “lock in” dirt
Household products create a thick foam that cannot be fully rinsed out with a cloth or a household vacuum. These chemicals stay inside the foam padding, dry, and then attract new dust like a magnet. The stain comes back, only three times larger.
Chemical burns on fabric
Aggressive home remedies (such as citric acid or hydrogen peroxide) often react with the upholstery dye. The fabric goes bald or loses its color. No technician can fix that; only reupholstering will help.
What to do if something gets spilled
- Do not rub the stain in circles: that pushes the dirt deeper into the fibers.
- Gently blot it with a dry paper towel.
- Leave the stain alone and call a technician with a professional extractor that pulls the dirt out instead of pushing it in.
