Urine smell on a sofa or mattress: why home remedies only mask the problem

Stains on a grey sofa before cleaning

A urine stain on a sofa or mattress happens in many homes with children, pets or elderly relatives. And almost everyone first tries home remedies: vinegar, baking soda, air fresheners. We strongly advise against it. At best you will mask the smell for a few days, and that is it. The reason lies in what urine does in fabric.

What urine is and why it lingers

Urine is about 95% water, and the rest is urea, salts, creatinine and uric acid. Fresh urine does not smell very strong, but that changes quickly. Bacteria, which are present on any surface, break down urea, and ammonia with its sharp smell forms. Warmth and humidity speed this up.

When the stain dries, uric acid and its salts form crystals that dissolve very poorly in water. Plain water, soap or vinegar do not wash them out. As soon as the air gets more humid or the stain gets wet, the crystals absorb moisture, bacteria become more active again, and the smell comes back. That is why the stain seems to “come alive” a week after cleaning.

On top of that, urine goes deep. Fabric lets liquid through into the sofa foam or mattress filling. There the stain spreads wider than you can see on top, and that is where most of the smell comes from.

With cats the smell is even more persistent: their urine contains felinine, a substance that breaks down into a characteristic sharp sulphur smell. And a pet that smells its mark often returns to the same spot.

Why home remedies do not work

Vinegar, being an acid, neutralises ammonia on the surface for a while but does not dissolve the crystals in the foam. Baking soda absorbs some smell from the top layer of fabric but does not reach the filling. Air fresheners and perfumes only cover the smell: when their scent fades, the urine smell remains.

Pouring lots of water on the stain is even worse. It pushes urine wider into the filling, and the stain gets bigger. Bleach can discolour the fabric, and together with the ammonia from urine it forms compounds that are harmful to breathe.

What you can do right away

If the stain is fresh, blot it with dry paper towels or a cloth without pressing, moving to dry areas. Do not rub and do not pour water on it: that spreads the urine even deeper. That is where the do-it-yourself part ends. The sooner the stain is cleaned professionally, the less urine has time to soak into the filling.

How we remove urine smell

Urine has to be washed out from deep in the filling; surface cleaning is not enough here. The technician comes to you with the equipment: dry cleanup, then cleaning with an extractor that feeds solution into the fabric and immediately draws it back out together with the dirt from deep inside the upholstery or mattress, and turbo drying so the sofa or mattress dries faster. If urine has been getting into the same spot for years, some of the smell may have sunk deep into the filling. We will tell you honestly what can be removed after an inspection.
