Smoke smell in furniture after a missile strike: how we removed it

Sofa after full upholstery cleaning and smoke smell removal

Today our team worked at the Seven residential complex in Osokorky, a Kyiv neighbourhood hit by a missile strike. The apartment survived, but a heavy smell of smoke stayed. That smell is what reminds people of that night the longest, and that is why the owners called us.

Why the smell does not go away on its own

Smoke gets into an apartment even through closed windows. Soot particles settle in the fabric fibres, the cushion filling and the hollows inside the sofa. Airing the room does not help: upholstered furniture soaks up the smell like a sponge and releases it for weeks.

What we did

We carried out a full upholstery cleaning:

  • took the sofa apart: removed the cushions, opened the mechanism and the bedding box;
  • thoroughly vacuumed the seams, folds and inner hollows;
  • deep-cleaned the fabric with products that break down soot particles instead of masking the smell;
  • treated the storage box from the inside;
  • dried the furniture with a special professional blower, so the fabric and filling dry quickly and evenly, with no stains or damp smell, and the sofa can be used almost straight away.

The result is in the photo at the top: the fabric is clean and even, and most importantly, the apartment has fresh air again.

A tip for owners

Do not try to cover the smell with air fresheners: they only mix with the smoke. The smell has to be removed from the fabric and the filling themselves.
