Spilled coffee or milk on a sofa or car seat: what to do in the first minutes
Coffee in the car or a glass of milk on the sofa is an everyday thing that happens to everyone. In the first minutes there is one main task: do not let the liquid soak deep into the foam of the sofa or car seat. What you do right away decides whether a regular cleaning will be enough later.
Why it is more serious than it looks
Under the upholstery of a sofa or seat there is foam. It has an open, porous structure and works like a sponge: it quickly absorbs liquid and carries it deep inside, where you cannot reach at home.
Milk contains proteins (mostly casein), fats and milk sugar, lactose. For bacteria it is an ideal growth medium. In warm, damp foam they multiply quickly, break down the proteins and fats, and a sour smell appears that only gets stronger day by day. In summer a car interior heats up, and the smell becomes especially noticeable.
Coffee leaves a stain because of brown pigments, melanoidins, which form when the beans are roasted. If the coffee had milk or sugar in it, you also get a sticky mark and food for the same bacteria.
What to do right away
Do not wet anything. Water or cleaning products spread the liquid over a larger area and push it deeper into the foam.
Take a dry cloth or paper towels and soak up most of the liquid without pressing. Press lightly and lift, using a dry part each time. If you press hard, the liquid goes into the foam.
That is the only professional tip worth doing yourself. Beyond that you will not manage: foam cannot be properly rinsed and dried at home. So it is best to go straight to a professional cleaning.
Why you should not wait
The longer milk or coffee stays in the foam, the deeper it soaks in and the more bacteria there are. There comes a point where removing the smell makes no economic sense: replacing the sofa cushion or seat is cheaper than trying to save it. So every day of waiting raises the risk that the item will have to be replaced.
How we remove it
Professional cleaning washes the liquid out together with the dirt from deep inside the upholstery and foam with an extractor: it feeds in a solution and immediately draws it back out. For cars, if the smell remains, ozone treatment helps.
